Astrology is an ancient wisdom teaching, a mystical science, an art and a language. In simple terms, astrology tracks the placements of the celestial bodies (planets, luminaries, asteroids and certain mathematical points) in relation to the earth, to each other, and to their location within the zodiac.

Where Astrology Comes From

The roots of astrology go back thousands of years. Some of the oldest rock art in the world is found in Australia, with sites dated to around 25,000 to 30,000 years old, and oral tradition alongside some researchers associate certain engravings, such as those at Ngaut Ngaut in South Australia, with the tracking of lunar cycles, though this hasn't been definitively dated or confirmed. Throughout human history, astrology has played an important role as a tool for understanding ourselves and the world around us.

The astrology we recognise today began to take shape in Babylon around 2000 BC, where priests tracked the movements of the planets and the Moon to divine the fates of kings and kingdoms. This personal, natal style of astrology, known as horoscopic astrology, emerged later still, developing in the Hellenistic world (particularly in Ptolemaic Egypt) from around the 2nd century BC, and continued to be practised in that form until roughly the 6th or 7th century AD. The tropical astrology we use today is a hybrid of these ancient teachings, with roots in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Rome and Greece.

One of the primary differences between Human Design and astrology is that astrology has been formulated through thousands of years of astrologers collecting data. It's a collaborative system, built and refined by generations of practitioners, whereas Human Design was received as a complete system.

What Astrology Can Show You

Understanding your astrology can help you understand more of who you are, as well as the world around you. One of the beautiful things about astrology is that it offers insight not just into ourselves, but into our experiences, our environment and our biggest life events.

Astrology can help you see when you might be moving through a more challenging period, one where you are stretched and tested. In contrast, it can help you understand when you're moving through a season of greater ease and flow.

Astrology centres around the placements of the celestial bodies in your chart in relation to the earth, the zodiac, and each other. Below are the key building blocks to explore in your own chart.

The Luminaries: Sun and Moon

Your Sun and Moon are known as the luminaries, and they describe your essential self and your driving force. Your Sun placement speaks to your core identity, your vitality and the qualities you are here to shine and grow into. Your Moon placement speaks to your inner emotional world, your instinctive needs, and what makes you feel safe and nourished. Together, they form the essential core of who you are, beneath everything else in your chart.

Your Rising Sign

Your rising sign describes how you assert yourself in the world, and the first impression others get when they come into contact with you. It marks the beginning of your first house, and sets the stage for how the rest of your chart is expressed outwardly. Where your Sun and Moon describe who you are on the inside, your rising sign describes how that self meets the world.

The Angles

Your angles, the Ascendant (AC), Descendant (DC), Midheaven (MC) and Imum Coeli (IC), describe your experience across the four primary areas of life: self-actualisation, home and family, love and partnerships, and career and visibility. The angles are mathematical points calculated from the exact moment of your birth, rather than physical bodies like the planets or the Moon. They mark the divisions between the quadrants of your chart, and it is your Ascendant that determines the placement of your first house. Because of this, the angles often carry more precise, personal information than the houses they anchor.

The Planets

The planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto each describe a different function of energy and how you uniquely express yourself. Mercury shows how you think and communicate. Venus shows how you give and receive love, and what you value. Mars shows how you take action and what you desire. Jupiter shows how you approach growth, faith and expansion. Saturn shows where you build discipline, structure and boundaries. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, the outer planets, describe your innovation, your imagination and your capacity to transform through intensity and pressure.

The Houses

The houses describe the various areas of life, and where your energy most naturally wants to be expressed. Each of the twelve houses governs a different domain, from identity and home to partnership, career and purpose. The house a planet falls in shows where in your life that planet's energy tends to play out.

The Zodiac Signs

The zodiac signs describe broader qualities of energy that flavour the houses and planets in your chart. Each sign carries its own texture, whether fixed, adventurous, changeable or nurturing, and this quality is activated wherever a planet sits within that sign. You hold all twelve signs somewhere in your chart, but the signs where you have planets placed are the most significant expressions of who you are.

Aspects

Aspects describe how the planets and luminaries in your chart interact with one another, offering insight into your greatest gifts and your greatest challenges. Some aspects create ease and flow between two placements, while others create tension that asks to be worked through. Reading your aspects is where a chart moves from a list of placements into a living, interconnected story.

Astrology and Human Design, Together

Astrology is a wonderful system, but to get the most out of it, it's important to first cultivate a solid foundation in your Human Design experiment. I use the two systems together, and they are incredibly complementary, but the magic of your astrological chart unlocks through the embodiment of your Human Design. If you are approaching your astrology from a mental place, trying to align with your Jupiter placement through thought alone, you are most likely to stay stuck, and to miss the true potential available to you.

Everything above describes the building blocks. Your own chart is where they come together. Pull up your free birth chart and mini report here to see your Sun, Moon, Rising, Energy Type, Strategy and Authority mapped out specifically for you.

FAQ

What is astrology, in simple terms?
Astrology is the study of the celestial bodies, the planets, luminaries and certain mathematical points, and how their placements at the moment of your birth describe your personality, your experiences and the timing of events in your life.
How old is astrology?
Astrology's roots trace back to Babylon around 2000 BC, where priests tracked celestial movements to divine the fates of kings. The personal, natal-chart style of astrology we use today, known as horoscopic astrology, developed later, emerging in the Hellenistic world from around the 2nd century BC and continuing in that form until roughly the 6th or 7th century AD.
What's the difference between astrology and Human Design?
Astrology is a collaborative system, built and refined by thousands of years of astrologers collecting data. Human Design, by contrast, was received as a complete system. Both work beautifully together, but embodying your Human Design is what unlocks the deeper potential of your astrology.
Do I need to know my exact birth time for an accurate chart?
Yes, ideally. Your birth time determines your rising sign, your houses and your angles, all of which shift throughout the day. Without an accurate birth time, these placements can't be calculated correctly.
Where should a beginner start with their birth chart?
Start with your Sun, Moon and rising sign; these three placements alone offer a strong foundation for understanding your essential self, your emotional world and how you come across to others.
