How I Weave Human Design and Astrology Together
Human Design and astrology work beautifully together when each system does its own job. Here's how I weave both, in what order, and why, after 8+ years of client work.

Two charts, one curriculum.
Yes, you can work with Human Design and astrology together, and you don't have to pick a side. The two systems answer different questions. Your astrology chart describes who you are here to become; your Human Design shows you how you are built to get there. After eight years of working with both, for hundreds of clients and students, this is how I hold them, in what order, and why. If you work with both systems, or you are curious about adding one to the other, I hope this saves you a few years of confusion.

Why people feel like they have to choose
People ask me about this a lot, usually somewhere around their second or third rabbit hole. They have found Human Design, or they have found astrology, and then they have found the other one, and now they are standing in the middle holding two charts and wondering if they are supposed to pick a side.
You are not.
But I understand why it feels that way. Both systems are talking about you. Both were calculated from the same moment: your birth, your breath, your arrival. And both communities can get a little territorial about which one holds the real answers.
I have spent years working with both, studying both, and reading both for hundreds of clients. What I have found is that the two systems are answering entirely different questions. When you let each one do the job it is actually good at, something clicks into place that neither can give you on its own.
Not all astrology plays well with Human Design
Let me start with a distinction that took me a while to understand.
When I say astrology and Human Design work beautifully together, I am talking about a specific kind of astrology. Modern astrology, and especially the evolutionary and archetypal lineages; the schools that treat the chart as a portrait of consciousness rather than a verdict.
Modern astrology holds a core assumption I care about deeply: you are a conscious participant in your life. The chart describes energies, themes, tensions and gifts, and you are the one living them out. You have agency inside your placements. A Saturn transit is a training ground, and how you show up to the training matters.
Traditional astrology, for all its precision and beauty, carries a different underlying worldview. In many of its branches, fate lives in the chart. The chart tells you what will happen, which planets are your friends, which houses hold your misfortune. You are the recipient of your life more than the author of it.
Traditional techniques are rigorous and often stunningly accurate, and plenty of traditional astrologers work with far more nuance than the old texts suggest. But the orientation matters. A system built on the premise that life happens to you will always sit awkwardly next to Human Design, which is built on the premise that you are here to make correct decisions from your own authority.
There is a way of saying this in Human Design language that I find useful. Traditional astrology was born from a seven-centred world. It reflects the consciousness of the humans it was made for: strategic mind, external authority, survival logic, hierarchy.
We have evolved beyond that. We are now nine-centred beings, wired for inner authority, self-trust, and a much more individuated path.
Modern astrology, especially the evolutionary and archetypal streams, grew up alongside that shift. It speaks to the nine-centred process. It assumes you are evolving, and that the chart is participating in your evolution rather than dictating it.
So when I weave the two systems, that is the astrology I am weaving. The kind that hands you a mirror, and trusts you to be the one looking into it.
What each chart is actually for
Your astrology chart shows you who you are here to become. So do your Gene Keys, which sit in the same family for me: a portrait of your highest potential, told through archetype and myth. The becoming.
Your Human Design gives you the map to get there. More than the map, honestly. It gives you the keys that unlock and drive the vehicle. The mechanics. The how.
Astrology is extraordinary at describing the terrain of a life. The themes you will keep meeting. The gifts that want expression. The wounds that keep asking for your attention until you finally give it. When I read a natal chart, I am reading a curriculum: this is what this soul came here to learn, wrestle with, refine and offer.
But astrology, on its own, is thin on operating instructions. It can tell you that you are here to become a teacher of hard won wisdom. It cannot tell you how you, specifically, are built to make decisions. Whether you are designed to initiate or respond. Whether your clarity arrives in an instant or needs to move through a full emotional wave before it can be trusted.
That is Human Design's territory. Type, strategy and authority are the drivetrain. They are how you actually move through the terrain your astrology describes.
This is why I hold Human Design as the foundation, always. Everything a person digests about their astrology lands differently once they are living their strategy and authority. The same transit reading, the same natal insight, hits completely differently in a body that has learnt to trust its own mechanics. Before that, astrological insight tends to get processed by the mind, filed under interesting, and acted on from the same conditioned patterns as everything else.
After it, insight becomes usable. You hear that Jupiter is expanding your tenth house, and instead of forcing a launch because the transit says now, you take the information back to your authority and let it confirm or decline.
The sky offers the invitation. Your design decides whether it is correct for you.
Which brings me to the part nobody wants to hear.
Deconditioning is the whole game
If I could only give a person one practice from either system, it would be this one. Deconditioning. The slow, honest work of noticing where you have been living as someone you are not.
In Human Design terms, conditioning is everything you absorbed through your openness. The pressure you took on that was never yours. The consistency you forced because the people around you had it and you learnt to mimic it. The decades of decisions made from your head, or from other people's fear, or from a nervous system trained to earn safety through output.
Deconditioning is the process of letting all of that fall away so the actual you can run the show.
And here is my honest take, as someone who adores the intricacy of these systems: without deconditioning, everything else becomes mind candy.
You can know your profile lines, your incarnation cross, your Chiron placement, your progressed Moon, your Gene Keys spheres. You can be genuinely fluent. And your life can remain exactly the same, because knowing about your design and living from your design are two entirely different activities. One happens in the mind. The other happens in your choices, in real time, usually in moments that feel small.
The mechanism is simple to describe and humbling to practise. The more awareness you can bring to the patterns keeping you stuck, the more possibility you have to choose differently in the moment. That is it. That is the transformation. Awareness, then a different choice. Then another one. The charts exist to sharpen that awareness, to show you precisely where your patterns live and what your correct alternative looks like.
Deconditioning is the unsexy work. Nobody makes a beautiful carousel about the third year of watching yourself say yes from obligation and feeling it in your body before you can stop it. But it is the work with the biggest return I have ever witnessed, in my own life and in every client I have walked with. The people who change are rarely the ones who know the most. They are the ones who kept catching themselves.
So when someone asks me where to start, my answer is almost boring. Live your strategy and authority. Watch your open centres. Let the rest of the knowledge come later, once there is a you at home to receive it.
Two charts, one invitation
The other thing I want to speak to, because it changes how you read everything, is that I treat both charts as a spectrum of potentiality.
Every placement, every gate, every aspect carries a range of expression, from contracted to expansive. The Gene Keys make this explicit with the journey from shadow to gift to siddhi, and I find the same spectrum running through every astrological placement too. Saturn as paralysing self-criticism, or Saturn as mastery and self-respect. The same signature, lived at different frequencies.
Which means your chart is an invitation rather than a sentence.
This matters because so many people meet their charts and immediately start looking for the bad news. The difficult placements. The reasons they are the way they are, held as evidence against themselves. I understand the impulse. But it misses what the chart is actually offering.
When I sit with both charts together, the question I am asking is always the same: how has this person come here to grow and evolve? What is the curriculum? Every chart has one, and it is usually visible within minutes. The themes repeat across systems, which is part of why working with both is so confirming. The astrology says it one way, the Human Design says it another, the Gene Keys say it a third way, and the person sitting across from me starts to cry a little, because they have known this about themselves their whole life and nobody ever gave them language for it.
That moment of recognition is the point. The charts describe a growth path you are already on. They make it conscious, so you can walk it with intention instead of being dragged along it by repetition.
How it comes together in practice
If you want the working order I use, for yourself or for the people you read for, it goes like this.
Human Design first, as the ground. Learn your type, strategy and authority, and actually experiment with them. Give it months, honestly. This is the vehicle, and there is no substitute for learning to drive it.
Deconditioning alongside, as the practice. Get intimate with your not-self. Notice where your decisions have been coming from. Catch the patterns with as much compassion as you can manage.
Astrology as the becoming. Once the foundation is in, let your natal chart show you the terrain: your themes, your gifts, your curriculum. This is where evolutionary and archetypal astrology sing, because they will speak to your potential rather than your fate.
Gene Keys as the contemplation. Slow, spacious, taken one key at a time. They deepen everything above without demanding anything from you.
Transits last, as the weather. Timing information is genuinely useful, but only for a person already anchored in their own authority. Otherwise the sky becomes one more external voice telling you what to do, and you have enough of those already.
Held this way, the systems stop competing and start layering. The astrology names who you are becoming. The Human Design shows you how you are built to get there. The deconditioning clears the path. And your authority, always, gets the final word on every step.
If you'd like to see both of your charts side by side, you can pull up your free astrology chart and Human Design BodyGraph here. It comes with a mini report written just for you, and it's often the beginning of exactly the kind of recognition I've described above.

FAQ
- Can you use Human Design and astrology together?
- Yes. They were both calculated from the same moment of your birth, and they answer different questions. Astrology describes who you are here to become; Human Design describes how you are built to make decisions and move through life. Used together, each one deepens the other.
- Should I learn Human Design or astrology first?
- I recommend Human Design first. Learning your type, strategy and authority gives you a reliable way to make decisions, and every astrological insight lands more usefully once that foundation is in place. Astrology then shows you the terrain your design is moving through.
- What is the difference between Human Design and astrology?
- Astrology is a map of themes, gifts and life curriculum, read from the positions of the planets at your birth. Human Design is a synthesis of several systems that describes your energetic mechanics: how you are designed to engage with the world, create opportunities, and make correct decisions.
- Does Human Design work with traditional astrology?
- They can coexist, but they hold different worldviews. Traditional astrology tends to place fate in the chart, while Human Design is built on inner authority and self-trust. Modern evolutionary and archetypal astrology shares that orientation, which is why it pairs so naturally with Human Design.
- What is deconditioning in Human Design?
- Deconditioning is the practice of noticing and releasing the patterns you absorbed through your open centres: pressures, expectations and ways of deciding that were never truly yours. It is the process that turns chart knowledge into lived change.
